A resposta Britânica

No geral o Reino Unido fez menos erros.

Afundamento[editar | editar código-fonte]

The Rattenbach report also concludes that “logistical operations did not unfold in an acceptable manner.” In fact, Rattenbach and his colleagues describe an unmitigated disaster. When they began their investigation, they soon discovered that it was “useless to seek any coherence” in the junta‘s logistical planning before it launched the invasion, and they could discern only improvised logistical operations afterward. They cite the 5th and 12th Infantry Regiments to illustrate what this meant on the ground. These units lacked vehicles and in many cases, ammunition. There was no internal transportation system to move the supplies they did have. This reduced their combat effectiveness by 40–50 percent before anyone had even fired a shot. “LOGISTICS CANNOT BE IMPROVISED,” Rattenbach aptly insists in all caps.

How Does This Help Us Understand the New Revelations?

Argentine junior officers and soldiers experienced the worst of the inadequate planning in logistics, and this led to their mistreatment. “There were deficiencies in the preparation and distribution of food, which had a negative impact on the troops’ physical state and morale,” Rattenbach and his colleagues acknowledge. They say nothing else on this issue. But these few words connect the Rattenbach report with the new revelations and more.

These words support veterans’ ongoing complaints against their superiors in Buenos Aires. The breakdown in discipline and morale ultimately derived from the operation’s logistical failures. As one veteran told journalists several months ago, “Some of us were tortured because we were starving and tried to grab some cookies or to butcher a sheep.”

All of this paints a very dreary portrait, revealing a failure of leadership that went well beyond the junta and the armed forces’ planners in Buenos Aires. The Rattenbach report singles out the 3rd Infantry Brigade’s commander for special criticism. This commander seems to have buried his head in the sand and chosen to remain “profoundly ignorant of the state of the forces under his command.” He took up residence in a home in Port Stanley and was simply “absent.”

Other officers, much closer to the troops, witnessing one operational and logistical failure after another, clearly mistreated the officers and soldiers in their charge, as veterans have long alleged. Some of these officers, incredibly, employed methods they had learned and practiced during the dirty war against the Argentine left in the late-1970s. This shows how seizing power and waging the dirty war had corroded the professional officer corps and degraded its efficiency. It impaired its judgment in international and military affairs, and it left some of its officers in such a state of depravity that, when confronted with a breakdown in discipline and morale of their own making, they deemed it appropriate to torture their own men.

An Unrecognised Critical Moment in British Naval History
Brief reports that the unarmed merchantman Atlantic Conveyor had been damaged by a lucky Argentine hit were broadcast on the evening of 25th May. But that day’s news was already dominated by the tragic destruction of HMS Coventry, one of the Royal Navy's most modern destroyers. And as some political leaders had already expressed concern about the mounting human and hardware cost of the war and their possible deleterious effects on public morale, it quite suited MoD planners to play down the details of Conveyor’s fate.

The return of Conveyor's badly shaken survivors to Britain in early June sparked some focussed media interest in the horrors of the attack on Conveyor, but little emerged about the circumstances of the raid itself. In more recent times, authors of historical works and TV documentaries have pointed out that the destruction of Conveyor's heavy lift helicopters famously meant the Royal Marines had to 'Yomp' to victory.
But arguably, a far more important consequence has been overlooked.

What the MoD was not keen to publicise at the time was that the Argentinians had picked the 25th May, their National Day, to deliver a decisive blow by sinking one of the two British aircraft carriers. If successful, the resulting casualties and loss of aircraft required to support the landings would most likely have fatally compromised the British campaign.

The Argentinian attack was well planned and caught the British by surprise. Two jets with extended ranges flew round the fleet's outer defences and each launched one of their country's last 'unstoppable' Exocet missiles at the carrier Flagship HMS Hermes. During the following few heart-stoppingly tense minutes of countermeasures and manoeuvres, orchestrated from Hermes, the British carriers turned to reduce their radar profiles whilst nearby Conveyor was ordered onto a course that increased her visibility to the missiles.

In the final seconds of flight, both Exocets followed their programmed instructions to look for the largest target close to Hermes’ original position. They found one and turned towards her. Moments later, the missiles slammed into Conveyor's port side blasting their burning propellant through her inflammable cargo. There can have been very few occasions in British Naval History when the fate of one ship has been so critical to the outcome of a war.

Conveyor's story is a powerful mix of adventure, intrigue and horrific tragedy. But more importantly, it is a tale of ingenuity, dedication and courage in the finest traditions of military and Merchant Navy service. The purpose of this site is to fill the gap in the historical record and to provide a focal point for the sharing and recording of first hand information about Conveyor's brief wartime service whilst there are still those who remember.

Caso similar a Gibraltar:

Durante 4 anos Espanhóis e Britânicos dividiram as ilhas!

Apenas a proximidade!

Introduction

After the recapture of South Georgia British attention was now focused on the main objective, the Falkland Islands themselves. Diplomatic negotiations and attempts to solve the situation peacably came to a practical end with the final rejection of the Haig peace proposals by the Argentinian Junta on 29 April. In reaction to this and in preparation for the final assault, on 30 April Britain declared a total exclusion zone around the Falklands to protect any non-combatant aircraft or vessels. In the closing hours of the same day, the United States openly gave its support for the British action, now seen by many as both inevitable and inescapable. Commentators of the time and since have speculated on the need or wisdom of military action to retrieve the invaded territories, but it must be said that all other avenues, diplomatic, negotiative and the 'warning shot' of the recapture of South Georgia had been exhausted and ignored by the Junta. There simply was no other choice. The stage was set, and the first players were moving into position.

4th of May 1982: Argentines destroy HMS Sheffield
The British ship HMS Sheffield has been hit by an Argentine missile fired from a fighter bomber.
It is not clear how many of the 268 crew have perished.
The sinking has shocked the British nation and foiled any possible diplomatic solution to the current dispute over the Falkland Islands between Britain and Argentina.
The ship caught fire when a French-made Exocet missile penetrated deep into HMS Sheffield's control room. The blaze caused a poisonous smoke and most of the crew abandoned ship.
A major rescue operation has been launched in the South Atlantic as relatives thousands of miles back in the UK wait for news of their loved ones.
The 4,100-ton destroyer was struck as it carried out a scouting mission off the Falkland Islands, although its exact position is a secret.
Announcing the news on television, the spokesman for the Ministry of Defence Secretary, Ian McDonald, said the ship was "in the course of its duty within the total exclusion zone around the Falkland Isles".
Two missiles were fired by a Super-Etendard fighter-bomber. One missed but the other scored a direct hit and ignited a fire.
The Exocet missile is designed to skim the sea to avoid radar detection. It has its own radar that guides it to its intended target.
The attack follows yesterday's sinking of the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano. An Argentine diplomat in the United States said the destruction of HMS Sheffield was "justified after the massacre that the English have done shelling our men and our ships".

HMS Sheffield (D80)

Over the six days from 4 May 1982, five inspections were made to see if any equipment was worth salvaging. Orders were issued to shore up the hole in Sheffield's starboard side and tow the ship to South Georgia. Before these orders were effected, however, the burnt-out hulk had already been taken in tow by the Rothesay-class frigate Yarmouth. The high seas that the ship was towed through caused slow flooding through the hole in the ship's side, which eventually sank her. The ship sank at 53°04′S 56°56′W on 10 May 1982, the first Royal Navy vessel sunk in action since World War II. Twenty of her crew (mainly on duty in the galley area and in the computer room) died as a result of the attack. The wreck is a war grave and designated as a protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.

RFA Sir Tristram (L3505) being carried home by the heavy lift ship MV Dan Lifter

On the 8th of June, while transporting men and equipment to Fitzroy Cove alongside the Sir Galahad, Sir Tristram was attacked by A-4 Skyhawks from Argentine Air Force's V Brigada Aérea (FAA), each loaded with three 500 lb Mark 82 bomb.[3] At approximately 14:00 local time the decks were strafed and two crew were killed. A 500 lb bomb penetrated the deck but failed to explode immediately, allowing the remaining crew to be evacuated. Following the later explosion, Sir Tristram was abandoned. Immediately following the end of the conflict, Sir Tristram was used as accommodation by members of 97 Fd Bty (Lawson's Company) Royal Artillery, initially in Fitzroy, and again later after she was towed round and moored in Port Stanley.
After the war, the Hulk was re-floated and towed to Stanley, where she was used as an accommodation ship until 1984. Sir Tristram was then returned to the United Kingdom on a heavy lift ship and extensively rebuilt.

Argentine vice-president Gabriela Michetti ratified before the United Nations General Assembly her country's “legitimate and imprescriptible” sovereignty rights over the disputed Falkland/Malvinas Islands and made a new call on the United Kingdom to resume “bilateral negotiations”

Ms. Michetti addressing the 72nd General Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, in New York, called to seek a peaceful solution to the territorial conflict, “respecting the way of life of the Islanders”.

In this context, Ms Michetti who is replacing president Mauricio Macri in the midst of crucial midterm elections campaigning, pointed out that the current Argentine government is involved in a new climate “in relations between the two countries”, and expressed hopes that “both governments could sit at the negotiations table”.

No evento, ninguém chamou o comandante.

HMS Coventry (d118)

Lying with her port side buried in the seabed, this is the outline of HMS Coventry, one of three Falklands wrecks surveyed in stunning detail by HMS Enterprise to mark the 35th anniversary of the South Atlantic conflict. The separated remains of HMS Antelope, which lie at a 45-degree angle on the bottom of San Carlos Water, and her sister HMS Ardent, which sank in nearby Grantham Sound after being hit by a succession of bombs, were also scanned by Enterprise and her hi-tech survey launch Spitfire

Falklands war hero surgeon who was honoured by both British and Argentine authorities has died aged 71

A Royal Navy surgeon who saved the lives of British and Argentine forces during the Falklands conflict has died.

Surgeon Captain Rick Jolly, 71, set up a field hospital in an abandoned refrigeration unit at Ajax bay. Captain Jolly was the senior medical officer of 3 Commando Brigade. Gulf War veteran John Nicholl wrote on Twitter: 'Very sad to hear Surgeon Commander Rick Jolly has died.

'Shared a glass of wine with him on a few occasions; a nicer chap you will not meet. A true hero of 1982 Falklands war; decorated by both sides. 'He should have won the highest award 4 his rescue of 2 drowning sailors. RIP Sir.'

The field hospital was described as The Red and Green Life Machine and treated both British and Argentine casualties.

Following the conflict, Captain Jolly was awarded an OBE by the Queen, while Argentine authorities appointed him to the Order of May for his dedication to their casualties in 1982.

Retaining HMS Ark Royal, an Audacious class aircraft carrier, would have been beneficial in the Falklands War and perhaps even prevented it.

Having another capital ship, which was an Audacious class aircraft carrier equipped with McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 alongside Blackburn Buccaneers, would have been a huge asset, and potentially could have made a difference in the Falklands War and perhaps even have prevented it.

I think the simple answer to the headline is yes, as there would have been greater air cover and range to protect the ships in the fleet, with Argentina well aware of this fact they may not have invaded.

This is very much a what if question, that has possibly been posed by other scholars. The Royal Navy was in a middle of another round of defence cuts which would have meant some of the capital ships including HMS Invincible would have been sold.

Interesting when you look into the political and strategic aspects that as early as 1966, the UK Defence White Paper had planned to scrap the British Aircraft carriers in the early 1970s, leaving Britain without an aircraft carrier capability.  However, a new government reexamined the case and found that only shore-based aircraft was not sufficient to provide the defence needs of our global interests which were ‘East of the Suez’.

Sadly, the political issue of saving money in spite of our defence needs was one which led to the ultimate decision to scrap Ark Royal, without a replacement fixed-wing aircraft carrier to fulfill her role and functions. It is worth noting that HMS Ark Royal, did have a sister ship in its line Audacious–class aircraft carrier’s that was HMS Eagle.

The ship entered HMNB Devonport, and was subsequently decommissioned on the 14th February 1979. Finally, the scrapping of HMS Ark Royal took place in 1980, and this marked an end to the Royal Navy’s ability to project conventional fixed-wing air-power. However, another interesting fact was that breaking up of Ark Royal took until 1983.

A question remains, could she have been brought back to service on time?

During its last tour of duty, the aircraft complement of the Ark Royal was as follows: 14 Buccaneer S2s, 12 Phantom FG1s, 4 Gannet AEW3, 1 Gannet COD4, 7 Sea king, and 2 Wessex helicopters. This is quite something and definitely would have been an effective deterrent.

During its history, while HMS Ark Royal underwent many refits and innovations, it did suffer from technical issues due to the age of the vessel as it was built in 1944. However, sadly the aircraft carriers which replaced her were not able to be equipped with traditional aircraft. It is one of those what-if scenarios that can be debated, would it have stopped the war?

There were also plans to sell the Australians the HMS Invincible, but after the Falklands war, and the government seeing the utility of this ship it was decided to cancel to sale. This is the case of accountancy over strategic necessity. This ship was invaluable during the Falklands conflict and should not be forgotten in its role as a key capital ship.

This is seen in the case of the Centaur class aircraft carrier HMS Hermes which did see successful action in the Falklands, and it could arguably be the case, that its very survival along with the HMS Invincible was the reason the War in the Falklands was victorious for the British. HMS Hermes, was converted to a helicopter carrier, and then to a vertical take-off and landing aircraft carrier – suitable for the Harrier jump jets which were invaluable to military efforts during the Falklands War.

My argument here is that with the ability to launch fixed-wing aircraft which HMS Ark Royal would have been able to, would have shifted the balance of power more favorably to the British Royal Navy, and provided even greater aircover while possibly deterring the war in the first place. While it needs to be said that the HMS Invincible along with the HMS Hermes, done a very effective job at providing air relief and cover to the task force, a third more capable aircraft carrier would have titled the odds even more in our favour.

It was a mistake for the Ministry of Defence, despite the technical and mechanical difficulties which beset HMS Ark Royal, to have scrapped her unnecessarily.

1982: Argentina invades Falklands
Argentina has invaded the British territory of the Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic.
The islands, off the coast of Argentina, have been a cause of friction between the two countries since Britain claimed them in 1833.

The Argentine flag is now flying over Government House in the Falkland Islands' capital, Port Stanley.

The head of the country's military junta, General Leopoldo Galtieri, has welcomed the "recovery" of "Las Malvinas" - the Argentine name for the Falklands.

General Galtieri said Argentina had been left with no option other than military action.

The invasion followed months of sabre-rattling and a build-up over the past few days of Argentine war ships off the Falkland Islands, home to about 1,800 people.

'Unprepared'

At 0600 on Friday Argentina began "Operation Rosario" when a unit of Argentine troops landed near Port Stanley.

The leader of the Argentine forces, Admiral Jorge Anaya, had contacted the Falklands' governor, Rex Hunt, to appeal for a peaceful surrender.

But the request was rejected and the 80 members of the Royal Marine regiment stationed on the island and 20 locals were mobilised.

But by early afternoon they were vastly outnumbered by about 3,000 Argentine troops.

After an attack on Government House during which one Argentine soldier is said to have been killed, Rex Hunt ordered the British troops to surrender.

No Falkland Islanders or Royal Marines died in the fighting though one serviceman is reported to be badly wounded.

The British Government has cut diplomatic ties with Argentina and started to assemble a large naval taskforce to reclaim the islands.

Questions are being asked as to why the government was so unprepared given two recent "invasions" by Argentine civilians of another British territory in the region.

In the latest incident in March they planted a flag on South Georgia, an uninhabited island 800 miles (1287 kilometres) north east of the Falklands.

Argentine Coast Guard Short SC.7 Skyvan

two Skyvans of the Argentine Naval Prefecture participated in the Falklands War. Both aircraft were ferried to Port Stanley in April 1982. One aircraft was damaged by British naval gunfire on Stanley racecourse, and did not fly again; it was finally destroyed by shellfire during British bombardments on 12/13 June 1982. The second aircraft was used at Pebble Island, where it became bogged down in the soft ground, and on 15 May 1982 it was destroyed in a British assault During the SAS Raid on Pebble Island

Argentina has made a formal protest with the British embassy in Buenos Aires to reject Britain’s military exercises in the Falkland Islands, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

Buenos Aires has "taken notice" that these exercises will take place from October 15-29 and will include missile launches, the ministry said in a statement.

"Argentina rejects the holding of these exercises in Argentine territory illegally occupied by the United Kingdom," it said.

The ministry added that the United Nations and other international bodies have urged both countries to resume negotiations for "a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute."

Argentina made a similar protest two years ago and Britain argued that the exercises were routine.

The latest complaint comes after President Mauricio Macri warned Argentines late last month that they face painful months ahead after his government pledged tough austerity measures to meet the terms of an enlarged crisis loan from the International Monetary Fund.

Israel sold weapons to Argentina at the height of the Falklands War in 1982, according to newly declassified Foreign Office files.

British diplomats cited evidence that Israel had supplied the Argentine military junta with arms that were used against the Task Force during the campaign to liberate the islands.

Israeli military exports before the war included the Skyhawk jets that would later be used to bomb British warships, killing dozens of soldiers, sailors and marines.

Four British warships were sunk by bombs dropped from Skyhawks, including RFA Sir Galahad, a troop carrier that was set ablaze while anchored in Bluff Cove, killing 48 sailors and soldiers. Simon Weston, the badly burned veteran, was among the survivors. Another four ships were damaged by Skyhawks.

Argentina Hits British Ship With Missile - Aerial Footage

The British destroyer HMS Sheffield was sent to help in retaking the Falklands from the Argentines in 1982, but during its mission it was exposed to more than submarine attacks.

The sinking of the Argentinian General Belgrano on May 2 took the lives of 323 Argentinian men, and the South Americans were enraged.

Two Super Étendard aircraft then took off from Southern Argentina and launched two missiles aimed at HMS Sheffield.

Lieutenant Steve Iacovou, onboard the ship, later described in an interview: (QUOTE) “It really does amaze me now, when I come to think of it, that we watched it almost to the point of impact, when we quickly huddled together and dropped to the floor.”

On 23 May 1982, Argentinian attacks against the British Landing Group in San Carlos Water continued.

The first to launch were four A-4 Skyhawks from Fuerza Aerea Argentina's 5th Aviation Group from Rio Gallegos, quickly followed by four more Skyhawks from the Naval Aviation.

In yet another display of bravery, Argentinian pilots performed risky point-blank bombing attacks against Royal Navy ships.

While some of them paid the ultimate price and their technology proved less than reliable, success didn't evade them.

Owen Crippa - The Man Who Attacked The British Fleet All Alone (In a Trainer Jet)

As the British Amphibious Task Group entered San Carlos Water in the Falklands on 21 May 1982, the Argentine High Command initially thought it was a diversion.

They sent some aircraft to investigate. One of them was an MB-339, a light trainer/attack aircraft flown by Teniente de Navio Owen Crippa.

He first spotted a Lynx helicopter and was about to attack it but then, he saw the entire British landing force in a small bay.

He took the aggressive approach and attacked all alone in an aircraft never meant for such a task.
